Seaside Scavenge at Coogee Beach

February 17, 2018 @ 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Who knew that beach trash could turn into cash and prizes?

The Seaside Scavenge is a waterway clean-up and clothes swap event, where litter collected becomes currency to purchase quality pre-loved clothes, as well as books, toys and more, which have been donated by the local community. You can enjoy a relaxed afternoon of music and entertainment with presenters, such as Paul Hellier from Fair Food Forager.
It’s on Saturday, February 17th from 1pm to 5pm at Dunningham Reserve, Coogee Bay. Come learn from local eco-warriors about what you can do to stop wrapping yourself in single-use plastics, enjoy the live tunes on offer and have a wholesome day doing something good for the planet!
On a normal day, Sydney Fish Market is always busy with many tourists visiting from all over the world. In recent years, the main demographic of visitors are from Asian countries, such as China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippine.
This will be the 6th annual scavenge at this location, to clean the beach, since it began in 2013. This a community event which originated at Coogee Beach, which has grown, now having held events along most of Australia’s East Coast.
Twenty-nine successful Scavenges have taken place between Mornington Peninsula and Magnetic Island, attracting over 2,500 people to collect more than 4,500 kg of litter and 60,000 cigarette butts, as well as the redistribution of over 3,514 kg of pre-loved goods. This is an awesome collective effort from all involved.
Participants in the Scavenge clean-up will be rewarded for every 10 pieces they collect, with a token used as the currency in the pop-up seaside market, and you can even use your currency for a thirst quenching beverage from the legends at Coogee Pavilion.
The Seaside Scavenge is about having fun while doing something good for the oceans. It’s a great way to connect people in the community with the issue of marine debris pollution while working together in a light-hearted way to tackle the problem.
Since this started in 2013, it is estimated that 24 – 30 million tonnes of litter, mostly plastics, have made it from land into our ocean and most of this comes from land-based sources. Founder and Director, Anna Jane Linke says that “Seaside Scavenge is not only about opening peoples eyes to waterway pollution and providing an outlet to tackle the problem together. But it is also about encouraging people to cut-back on their single-use consumption”.
